The Burden Has Moved
The deeper science looks, the harder accident has to work.
I saw The Story of Everything last week.
I went looking for trouble.
Not because I needed a film to prove what I already believe, and not because I wanted another Christian argument dressed up as science. I went because I wanted to learn. I wanted to see the argument laid out visually. I wanted to sit with the claims about the universe, physics, biology, DNA, and the origin of life, and see whether the case held up under pressure.
It did more than hold up.
It refused to leave.
I already wrote The Universe Is Not an Accident because the physics would not leave me alone. The fine-tuning. The low-entropy beginning. The fact that reality had to arrive inside narrow tolerances before there could be stars, chemistry, planets, bodies, minds, language, judgment, or even the question of God. I wrote that the universe had to arrive with extraordinary precision before anything else could happen at all.
But The Story of Everything pressed somewhere I was not expecting.
The cell.
I expected cosmology. I expected fine-tuning. I expected the argument that the universe does not look casual, rough, or accidental. I did not expect to sit there and realize the biological argument may be even harder to explain away than the cosmological one.
The visuals were stunning, but that is not what got me. The machinery got me. The idea that inside the cell there is not just chemistry, but instruction.
Code. Translation. Sequence. Function.
Not vague complexity. Not a pretty pattern. Information arranged so that it can be copied, read, regulated, and executed. That is a different kind of problem.
Darwin could not see that.
That is not an insult. It is just reality. Darwin was not wrong about what he could see. He was incomplete because he could not see the machinery. He could observe variation, adaptation, and selection from the outside, but he did not know DNA existed. He could not inspect the operating system underneath life, and once you see the operating system, the old confidence starts looking thinner.
DNA is not a simple little string. It is actual stored instruction, written in four chemical letters, arranged in sequences the cell has to copy, read, edit, regulate, and translate. The deeper problem is that the code is not flat. It is not just one clean line of text read one way for one purpose. Some stretches of DNA can carry more than one layer of meaning. Chunks can overlap. A sequence can sit inside a larger sequence. Different reading frames can produce different outputs. The same physical region can participate in more than one function depending on how it is read, where it is read, when it is read, and what machinery is doing the reading.
That is not just storage. That is compression, coordination, and constraint.
We struggle to write software that cleanly does one thing without breaking. Anyone who has actually built anything knows this. Change one line in the wrong place and the system fractures. A route fails. A token stops validating. A dependency shifts and the whole build starts bleeding errors. Human engineers with modern tools, good documentation, and full intent still break systems constantly.
Then you look inside the cell and find information layered on information, read by machinery that also had to exist, producing function inside a living system that cannot wait around for a million broken builds before the first usable version appears. That is where the word accident starts losing its dignity.
A protein does not get to be mostly right. It has to fold into the right shape to do its job. Not approximately. Not emotionally. Actually. The shape is the function. The wrong fold is not a rough draft of success. It is failure with better chemistry.
A chain of amino acids folds into a specific three-dimensional form, and that form determines whether it can do the work the cell requires. One thing becomes another only if the order holds. Sequence becomes shape. Shape becomes function. Function becomes life. If the form is wrong, the system does not politely improvise meaning. It breaks, misfires, or gets discarded.
That is not a blob of living goo slowly getting lucky. That is dependency, and dependency changes the argument.
If a software system needs code, translation layers, runtime environments, dependencies, memory, error correction, and execution logic, nobody calls that accidental because the room is not full of children. But when the cell contains information, translation, machinery, regulation, overlapping instruction, and function, the same people suddenly become very patient with accident.
That patience is suspicious.
The obvious response is that science may eventually explain it. Fine. Maybe it will explain more than it has. Maybe future labs will map mechanisms that are invisible to us today. But science may explain it later is not an explanation.
It is a promissory note.
Sometimes that note is honest. Every serious person should admit what he does not know. I respect that. I would rather hear a physicist say we do not know than listen to someone fake certainty he has not earned. Humility in front of reality is not weakness. It is the beginning of seriousness.
But something changes when we do not know becomes a shield against the answer people do not want to consider. At that point, it is no longer humility.
It is protection.
That is what I kept feeling in the theater. Intelligent design still gets treated as if it is the fragile position, the childish position, the embarrassing position, the one that has to lower its eyes before serious people will let it into the room. I do not buy that anymore.
The burden has moved.
Brute fact is not an explanation. It is where explanation goes to die. The laws just are. The constants just are. The beginning just is. Fine, but then stop pretending inquiry is still running. The multiverse does not solve the problem either. It pushes it back. If there is some universe-generating mechanism producing different settings across different realities, you still have to explain the mechanism, why it exists, and why it is governed by any logic at all.
You did not get rid of design. You buried the question one layer deeper and hoped nobody would follow you down.
Hawking tried to answer the beginning by moving it into quantum cosmology. In his framing, time itself begins with the Big Bang, so asking what came before time is not really a question physics can answer. Fine. But if the beginning is governed by quantum law, where did the law come from? If the universe can be described by mathematical probabilities, where did the probability space come from? A law is not nothing. A probability field is not nothing. A mathematical structure capable of describing the origin of space, time, and matter is not nothing.
So when someone says the universe emerged according to law, my question is simple.
Who ordered the law?
The same question lives inside the cell.
Who ordered the code?
Because if your explanation begins with law, order, mathematics, probability, information, translation, and function, then you have already admitted the deepest features of the thing you are trying to avoid. You have smuggled intelligibility into the foundation and then acted shocked when someone asks why reality is intelligible.
People talk as if enough time solves the problem. Time can explain a lot. Time can accumulate change. Time can expose variation to selection. Time can amplify differences. But time does not write instructions by itself. Time does not explain why matter becomes meaningful. Time does not explain why chemistry becomes code.
That is the biological question I cannot get past.
The cell does not merely contain parts. It contains information that has to be read by other parts. DNA by itself is not enough. Machinery by itself is not enough. The information and the machinery belong together. The code needs the reader. The reader needs the code. The system has to function as a system before life can even begin to do the things Darwin observed from the outside.
That is not a small gap. That is the center of the problem.
The more I look at it, the more materialism seems overleveraged. It keeps borrowing order from reality while refusing to account for it. It borrows law. It borrows mathematics. It borrows information. Then it turns around and tells design to prove itself.
No.
If you want me to believe that a law-governed universe, biological code, and rational consciousness all emerge from blind matter without mind behind them, then you are the one making the enormous claim.
You carry that burden now.
I am a Christian. So when I look at the cell, I am not surprised that it looks instructed. I would be surprised if it did not. I believe God made the world. Creation is ordered because the Creator is rational. Reality is intelligible because it comes from Mind. The universe is not an accident because God is not an accident.
That does not mean intelligent design alone gets you all the way to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It does not. Fine-tuning does not prove the empty tomb by itself. DNA does not prove the Sermon on the Mount. Protein folding does not establish the authority of Scripture on its own.
But for me, it does not stop in abstraction.
I believe the Mind behind the universe has revealed Himself. The Creator is not silent. The God who made reality intelligible entered history. The road from creation to Christ is not forced, but it is real.
People will say that is theology, not science. But theology is not the enemy of science. That frame is broken. If God made the world, then science is not a rival kingdom. Science is one way we study what God made.
Science describes the order.
God explains why there is order at all.
The Christian claim is not that God hides in whatever science has not explained yet. That is too small. The claim is that God is the ground beneath everything science successfully explains. He is not one more variable inside the equation. He is why there is an equation.
That is the part people keep missing.
The more science reveals, the less accidental reality looks. That is the irony. The old story was that scientific discovery would make design feel smaller. I think the opposite is happening. The deeper we inspect reality, the more structure we find. The more machinery we find. The more code we find. The more narrowness we find.
And with every layer, accident has to work harder.
I walked into the theater expecting a movie about the universe. I walked out thinking about the cell.
The stars already had my attention. The numbers already had my attention. The beginning already had my attention. But DNA pressed somewhere new because it is not just matter arranged beautifully. It is matter carrying instruction. Four chemical letters. Machinery that reads it. A living system that depends on the whole thing holding together.
The universe had to be ordered before science could study it. The cell had to be instructed before Darwin could observe it. Mathematics had to be woven into reality before Hawking could write equations about the beginning of time.
So no, I am not pretending every mechanism is solved. I am not claiming a movie settled the whole debate. Mystery does not disappear the moment someone says God.
But I am done pretending design is the explanation that should be embarrassed.
If someone still wants to call all of this an accident, fine.
But do not call it modesty.
Call it a faith commitment with lab credentials.
